The government on Monday appointed Md Aminul Islam as the new chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), granting him the status, rank and privileges equivalent to those of the Attorney General of Bangladesh.

The appointment was announced through an official notification issued by the Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division earlier in the day.

According to the notification, the decision takes immediate effect.

The document, signed by Solicitor Md Monjurul Hossain, confirmed that Aminul Islam will assume his responsibilities as chief prosecutor without delay.

In addition to outlining the terms of his appointment, the notification also stated that the previous appointment of Advocate Tajul Islam as chief prosecutor of the ICT has been cancelled.

With the new appointment, Aminul Islam will lead the prosecution team at the tribunal, which is tasked with trying cases related to crimes under its jurisdiction. As chief prosecutor, he will oversee legal proceedings, guide prosecution strategies and represent the state in tribunal matters.

Granting him the status and privileges of the Attorney General signifies the importance attached to the position and underscores the government’s intent to ensure effective functioning of the tribunal.

No further details regarding the change were disclosed in the notification.
