Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said the government of Bangladesh has decided to form a fresh commission to reinvestigate the 2009 BDR mutiny and killings at the Pilkhana headquarters in Dhaka to ensure justice and clarity over the tragic incident.

“We will constitute another inquiry commission to look into the BDR carnage in line with our decision to ensure proper investigation and justice,” the minister told reporters after a meeting with the heads of forces under the Home Ministry.

He made the remarks in response to a question about implementing recommendations made by a previous inquiry commission formed during the interim government.

The deadly mutiny occurred on 25-26 February 2009 at the headquarters of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in Pilkhana, Dhaka. During the 33-hour, 74 people were killed, including the then BDR Director General and his wife, 57 army officers, two wives of officers and 15 others.

The massacre remains one of the most tragic incidents in the country’s history, prompting multiple investigations and court proceedings over the years.

The minister indicated that the newly formed commission would review past findings and examine any unresolved issues related to the incident.

Authorities said the move aims to provide transparency, address lingering questions and strengthen public confidence in the investigative process.

Further details about the composition and timeframe of the commission will be announced later, officials said.
