The Ministry of Law has moved to tighten discipline in office attendance, warning that late arrival, unauthorised absence and early departure without approval will invite disciplinary measures.

In an office order issued on Monday, the Law and Justice Division said such irregularities would be treated as punishable offences under the Government Employees (Regular Attendance) Rules, 2019.

Under the directive, all officials and employees must report to their respective offices by 9am on working days and remain present until the end of official hours. During Ramadan, no one will be allowed to leave before 3:30pm, while after the holy month, office hours must be observed until 5pm.

The order also stipulates that prior permission must be obtained from the head of the concerned sub-division - either a joint secretary or solicitor - if an official needs to leave the office for official duties or urgent personal reasons.

Authorities have made it mandatory for employees to record their departures in the office leaving register and ensure digital attendance in compliance with existing rules.

The ministry warned that any breach of the attendance policy would lead to action under both the Government Employees (Regular Attendance) Rules, 2019 and the Government Employees (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on workplace indiscipline.
