President Mohammed Shahabuddin is scheduled to pay solemn tribute to the martyred members of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), at the Banani Military Graveyard in Dhaka on Wednesday.

According to a notification issued by the Protocol Wing of the President’s Office, the President will lay a wreath at 10am as part of the observance of National Martyred Army Day.

The programme has been arranged to commemorate the sacrifices of the BDR members who lost their lives during the tragic events at the force’s headquarters in Pilkhana.

The ceremony will be conducted with due dignity and respect, reflecting the nation’s remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Officials said necessary preparations are being taken to ensure that the tribute programme is carried out smoothly and in an orderly manner.

In this regard, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Armed Forces Division and other relevant authorities have been requested to take appropriate measures and coordinate arrangements for the event.

The government decided on 23 February 2025 to officially observe 25 February as National Martyred Army Day.

The decision was taken to honour the army officers who were killed in the 2009 Pilkhana incident, one of the most tragic episodes in the country’s history.

The annual observance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the fallen personnel and reaffirms the nation’s commitment to remembering their service and dedication.
