Newly appointed Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Md Aminul Islam has pledged strict legal action against corruption if any individual associated with the tribunal is found involved in misconduct.

Speaking to journalists at his office on Tuesday afternoon, he said that accountability and transparency would be central to his tenure.

He made it clear that anyone connected to the tribunal, including prosecutors or staff, would face legal consequences if found engaging in corrupt practices.

“During my tenure, if I or any prosecutor or person linked with the tribunal is involved in corruption, strict legal measures will be taken. We will ensure that this tribunal remains fully corruption-free and delivers justice in accordance with international standards,” he said.

He further emphasised that the tribunal would operate strictly under the law with enhanced efficiency and transparency.

According to him, necessary reforms will be introduced to accelerate case disposal and align proceedings with the expectations of justice, including matters related to the July Mass Uprising.

The government appointed Md Aminul Islam as the ICT chief prosecutor on 23 February, granting him the status, rank and privileges of the Attorney General. A gazette notification issued by the Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division formalised the appointment and cancelled the previous appointment of Advocate Muhammad Tajul Islam as chief prosecutor.

Officials said the restructuring aims to strengthen the tribunal’s functioning and reinforce public confidence in its proceedings.
