An abducted schoolboy in Dhaka was rescued within an hour on Sunday after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed law enforcement agencies to take immediate action, according to officials.
The incident occurred in Khilgaon, a residential area in the capital. Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said the boy’s father, an employee at the Bangladesh Secretariat, approached the Prime Minister’s Office after learning of the abduction and informed Tarique Rahman directly.
Upon being briefed, the Prime Minister contacted senior police officials and instructed them to secure the boy’s release without delay.
Police said the ninth-grade student of National Laboratory Ideal School in Khilgaon was abducted at around 2:30 pm after leaving school premises. Four to five youths reportedly intercepted him and took him to a seven-storey under-construction building in the Jorapukur area of Khilgaon.
According to investigators, the abductors assaulted the boy and later called his father, demanding Tk 50,000 as ransom. They allegedly threatened to kill the student if the money was not paid.
Following the Prime Minister’s directive, Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna Division Masud Alam initiated contact with the suspects using the phone number from which the ransom demand had been made. Police assured the callers that the money would be delivered, while simultaneously tracing the location of the device.
Law enforcement officers subsequently conducted a raid at the under-construction building and rescued the boy. Police said the suspects fled the scene after sensing the presence of officers.
Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the abduction. The rescued student was later reunited with his family.
Officials described the swift recovery as the result of coordinated action between the Prime Minister’s Office and Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
