Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has submitted a formal resignation letter on Wednesday, citing personal and family reasons.

According to police sources, Sajjat Ali signed the application around 12:30pm and forwarded it to the Police Headquarters for necessary action.

The matter was later confirmed by DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman, who said the commissioner had requested to be relieved of his duties on family grounds.

Sajjat Ali was serving under a contractual appointment scheduled to remain in effect until 21 November this year.

However, he has opted to leave before completing the tenure. There was no immediate confirmation from the government on whether his resignation had been formally accepted.

His decision comes at a time when changes in key law enforcement positions are widely anticipated following the formation of a new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Sources within the administration have indicated that broader reshuffles could take place across major security agencies, including the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Speculation regarding high-level changes intensified after the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Earlier this month, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam resigned on 15 February. He was replaced by Additional Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir, who was appointed as the new IGP and assumed office on Tuesday.

Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali took charge as the 38th DMP Commissioner on 21 November 2024 during a period when officials described the capital’s law and order situation as sensitive following the political developments of 5 August 2024. Colleagues credit him with strengthening operational discipline and helping stabilise policing activities in Dhaka.

No announcement has yet been made regarding his successor.
