Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Wednesday said the government is working to modernise Bangladesh Television (BTV) and reshape it into a technology-driven public service broadcaster aligned with global digital advancements.
He made the remarks while briefing journalists after holding a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat, where issues related to media reform and institutional development were discussed in detail.
Zahir Uddin Swapan said the Prime Minister reviewed the ministry’s ongoing activities and provided guidance on how state-owned media platforms such as BTV and Bangladesh Betar can better serve public interests.
He noted that emphasis was placed on strengthening their role in promoting social values, especially among the youth, and enhancing the effective use of digital and social media platforms.
“Today’s discussion focused on strategic direction. We will formulate concrete proposals based on that guidance and revisit the matter for further deliberation,” the minister said, adding that policy planning would follow systematic preparation.
Responding to questions about reform initiatives for BTV, he said media institutions must adapt to the rapidly evolving technology-based communication landscape.
According to him, transforming BTV into a public service broadcaster requires institutional restructuring, digital integration and content development that reflects public needs.
He described the goal as creating a people-oriented broadcasting system and said necessary groundwork would be undertaken to turn the vision into practical implementation.
Regarding earlier remarks on the dismissal notices issued to four television journalists, the minister said discussions with concerned parties are ongoing.
He expressed optimism that a mutually acceptable resolution could be achieved through dialogue, although no final outcome has been reached yet.
