Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said the government has initiated comprehensive measures to reduce mosquito infestation and provide relief to urban residents suffering from the growing problem.

The minister made the remarks while visiting Dholpur area of the capital to inspect mosquito control activities, including the testing and application of insecticides used by the Dhaka South City Corporation.

He said immediate steps have been taken to address the surge in mosquito population.

Acknowledging public concern, he admitted that preventive actions should ideally have been implemented earlier to minimise the impact.

“Mosquito infestation has increased significantly. We started working right after assuming office. It has only been seven days since we took responsibility, but addressing this issue is among our top priorities,” he said.

The minister informed that samples of imported insecticides have been collected for laboratory testing to assess their effectiveness. If the chemicals are found ineffective, alternative solutions will be adopted without delay.

He expressed confidence that ongoing mosquito control operations would gradually bring relief to city dwellers and stressed that dengue prevention is receiving special attention under the ministry’s action plan.

Sakhawat Hossain also emphasised the importance of public participation in controlling mosquito breeding.

He urged residents to maintain cleanliness, eliminate stagnant water around homes and cooperate with authorities in prevention efforts.

Officials from Dhaka South City Corporation and representatives involved in the mosquito control programme were present during the inspection.

The government has pledged to strengthen coordination among local authorities and relevant agencies to ensure sustained and effective mosquito control measures across major cities.
