Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury on Wednesday called for deeper cooperation between workers and employers to address emerging challenges and enhance the country’s labour sector in line with national priorities.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives of the Bangladesh Employers Federation at the ministry’s conference room, the minister stressed the importance of building stronger institutional ties between labour and management to ensure productivity, stability and sustainable growth.
“We must explore new labour markets and create fresh opportunities. Our focus should be on action rather than words, always keeping the national interest at the centre of our efforts,” he said.
He added that effective coordination between stakeholders is essential to meet the evolving demands of both domestic industries and overseas employment.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Md Nurul Haque also attended the meeting and highlighted concerns regarding overseas workers.
He said shortcomings in Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) programmes are creating negative perceptions about Bangladeshi workers abroad.
“The preparation of our workers before they go overseas needs to be strengthened. Proper training and orientation will improve their professionalism and reputation,” he said, urging authorities to make training centres more active and efficient.
Participants at the meeting discussed ways to enhance skill development, improve labour standards, and expand access to international job markets. Officials from the ministry and leaders of the employers’ federation exchanged views on practical steps to upgrade training facilities, ensure better communication between industry and government, and promote a skilled workforce capable of competing globally.
The minister reiterated that improving labour-management relations will play a key role in strengthening economic development and ensuring long-term stability in the sector.
