Arakan Army chief Twan Mrat Naing has called on Bangladesh’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to open a new chapter of friendly relations between Rakhine State and Bangladesh.

In an unprecedented message sent on Wednesday, the Myanmar rebel leader congratulated Khalilur Rahman on assuming office and expressed hope that existing goodwill would help both sides find practical, sustainable, and workable solutions to issues of shared interest.

The Arakan Army currently controls most of Myanmar’s Rakhine State, including the entire border region adjoining Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Myanmar’s regime Foreign Minister Than Swe also sent a separate congratulatory message to his Bangladeshi counterpart. In his message, he reaffirmed Naypyidaw’s “firm commitment” to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

A senior official at Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said that the communications from both the Myanmar authorities and the Arakan Army reflect ongoing diplomatic engagements.

The official added that such exchanges indicate their confidence in the Bangladesh government’s ability to pursue a peaceful resolution to the Rohingya issue.

Khalilur Rahman recently confirmed that Dhaka has maintained contact with both sides regarding the matter.

Bangladesh has also been working closely with key international partners and the United Nations in efforts to secure a swift, durable and sustainable solution to the protracted Rohingya crisis.
