State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr M A Muhit on Thursday announced that the government plans to recruit 1 lakh health workers to enhance healthcare services at the grassroots level.

He made the announcement during his first official visit to his home district of Sirajganj as state minister, where he visited the 250-bed General Hospital and interacted with local health officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Muhit emphasised the government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ fundamental right to healthcare.

He said healthcare has been given top priority in the election manifesto and that expanding manpower is essential to improve service delivery across communities.

“Our nation has faced challenges related to corruption over the past years, with significant public resources misused. To overcome this, we need a strong social movement where the government and political stakeholders work together to safeguard citizens’ rights. Health is a basic right,” he said.

The minister noted that the recruitment of 1 lakh health workers, along with increased budget allocation, is aimed at strengthening healthcare services at the local level.

He added that the recruited workers will receive proper training, regular postings, and adequate support in terms of medical equipment and medicine supply to improve service quality.

Dr Muhit also acknowledged existing challenges, including unauthorised structures near hospital premises and the influence of middlemen, saying such issues require coordinated action at the local level rather than relying solely on central directives.

Earlier in the day, the state minister was accorded a guard of honour at the Sirajganj Circuit House.

He also met with local health officials at the deputy commissioner’s office before visiting the hospital.
