A 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Bangladesh on Friday afternoon, shaking Dhaka and several other districts, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The tremor struck at 1:52:29 pm (BST). The epicentre was identified in Asaashuni upazila of Satkhira district, around 188 kilometres south-west of the BMD’s seismic monitoring centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Residents in parts of the capital reported buildings swaying for several seconds, prompting many people to move outdoors as a precaution. Similar tremors were felt in other regions, though authorities did not immediately report casualties or major damage.

In a brief bulletin, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed the magnitude and location of the earthquake and said it is continuing to monitor seismic activity.

The latest quake comes a day after a 4.6 magnitude tremor was recorded across parts of the country on Thursday. Earlier, on February 25, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook Bangladesh, with its epicentre in Myanmar, about 462 kilometres east of Dhaka.

Bangladesh is located near the junction of major tectonic plates, making it vulnerable to earthquakes. Experts have repeatedly warned that densely populated urban centres, especially Dhaka, face significant risk if a stronger earthquake occurs.

Disaster management authorities have advised the public to remain calm, avoid using lifts during tremors and follow official safety instructions in the event of aftershocks.
