The distribution of family cards under government social safety net programmes must be carried out with full transparency and without nepotism, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said on Friday, stressing that only eligible beneficiaries should receive state assistance.

Speaking at an exchange of views meeting with district-level officials at the Barishal Circuit House, Zahir Uddin Swapan outlined a structured selection process to ensure accountability in family card distribution.

He said a committee would be formed in each union under the leadership of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, comprising the union chairman and two social workers. This team will verify eligibility criteria and oversee the distribution process to ensure it remains non-partisan and transparent.

The minister emphasised that preventing favouritism and irregularities is critical to maintaining public trust in welfare programmes. He added that the verification process must be rigorous so that government subsidies and food assistance reach intended households.

Highlighting the importance of data integrity in policymaking, Zahir Uddin Swapan also called for improved accuracy in the work of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. He said the institutional maturity of a state depends significantly on reliable statistical systems.

“Accurate data collection, proper preservation and timely dissemination of information are essential for effective governance,” he said, adding that modern decision-making relies heavily on a comprehensive database system. Without credible data infrastructure, policy decisions cannot be properly formulated or implemented.

Turning to healthcare policy, the minister said Barishal, despite being considered the gateway to southern Bangladesh, still lacks advanced medical facilities. He noted that critically ill patients often have to travel to Dhaka at significant cost and hardship.

He said upgrading Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital into a modern healthcare facility with advanced amenities is necessary to meet growing demand. Establishing a specialised trauma centre in Barishal is also essential to strengthen emergency response capacity, he added.

Superintendent of Police Farzana Islam attended the meeting as a special guest, while Deputy Commissioner Md Khairul Alam Sumon presided over the session. Officials from various government departments and representatives from the media were present.

The remarks reflect broader government efforts to strengthen transparency in welfare distribution, enhance data-driven governance and improve regional healthcare infrastructure.
