Free Wi-Fi will be introduced at all airports, railway stations and high-speed vehicles across Bangladesh as part of the government’s national ICT expansion plan, Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam announced on Friday.
Speaking after an exchange of views meeting with district-level officials at the Tangail Deputy Commissioner’s office, Fakir Mahbub Anam said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s vision to strengthen the information and communication technology (ICT) sector and expand digital access nationwide.
The minister described ICT as a strategic sector in the modern economy and said the government is prioritising infrastructure upgrades to ensure broader internet connectivity. He stated that the plan includes providing reliable internet access in major public transport hubs and enhancing digital services in high-speed transport systems.
Fakir Mahbub Anam said the government is committed to modernising communication networks, accelerating digital transformation and creating employment opportunities in the ICT sector. “We want to ensure internet access for every household and generate more jobs in the ICT industry,” he said.
He also issued directives to relevant departments to coordinate implementation of development initiatives, communication modernisation and digital infrastructure expansion. The minister stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration to ensure effective rollout and service reliability.
The free Wi-Fi programme is expected to support Bangladesh’s broader digital governance framework, improve passenger services and strengthen the country’s position in the regional digital economy.
Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam and other senior officials attended the meeting.
The announcement forms part of Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to expand digital connectivity, enhance public service delivery and advance ICT-driven economic growth.
