Teachers engaging in outside professions without prior approval will face investigation and disciplinary action, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Friday, reinforcing government rules aimed at strengthening accountability in the education sector.
Speaking to journalists after attending the monthly coordination meeting and law and order committee session at the Kachua Upazila Parishad auditorium in Chandpur, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said teaching is a full-time responsibility that requires complete professional commitment.
“If any teacher is involved in another profession without prior approval, allegations will be investigated and necessary action will be taken,” he said. He stressed that teachers must obtain permission from the appropriate authorities before engaging in any additional employment under existing regulations.
The minister said the primary duty of teachers is to ensure quality education in classrooms and that outside engagements should not interfere with academic responsibilities. Any complaints of irregularities will be examined thoroughly and dealt with according to the law, he added.
Highlighting the role of the media, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said objective reporting helps authorities identify negligence and enforce accountability. “If negligence in duty is exposed in the media, it will come to our notice, and we will take appropriate measures,” he said.
On teacher recruitment, the minister acknowledged that inadequate hiring in previous years has created staffing gaps that continue to affect schools and colleges. He indicated that reforms are underway within the established legal framework and asked for time to implement changes.
“There are clear rules and procedures in the education sector. Give me two to four months, and you will see visible changes,” he said, adding that he has outlined several plans to address structural weaknesses.
The minister clarified that education reform is not limited to constructing new buildings while classrooms remain understaffed. He said his priorities include filling vacant posts, improving education quality and ensuring institutional accountability.
Local party representatives, upazila administration officials and members of law enforcement agencies were present at the meeting.
The remarks signal a stronger enforcement approach in the education sector as the government seeks to improve governance standards and academic performance nationwide.
