State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Agriculture and Food Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has said the government is working with “utmost sincerity” to fulfil its commitments to the public, highlighting welfare programmes, agricultural support and press freedom as key priorities.
Speaking at an introductory meeting and Iftar gathering for the newly elected executive committee of the Tangail Press Club on Friday, the minister said the administration led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman remained focused on public welfare and democratic values.
He told journalists that the government was maintaining a “liberal and positive” stance towards media freedom and insisted there was no interference in the press. Reporters, he said, would be able to carry out their professional responsibilities independently and without restriction.
Emphasising the role of responsible journalism, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said the media plays a vital part in strengthening democracy, promoting development and maintaining social stability. He urged journalists to prioritise objective and fact-based reporting, describing their contribution as essential to nation-building.
Outlining ongoing initiatives, the state minister said the government was implementing a range of programmes aimed at strengthening social safety nets and supporting farmers. Distribution of family cards and agricultural cards is under way, he said, alongside measures to ensure fertilisers, pesticides and other farming inputs are available at affordable prices.
He added that reducing production costs for marginal and small-scale farmers was a priority in order to make agriculture more profitable and sustainable.
Referring to pre-election pledges, the minister said coordinated steps had already been taken to address crime and social disorder in Tangail. He cited efforts to curb extortion, juvenile gangs and drug-related activities and said law enforcement agencies were working to maintain order and stability.
The event was chaired by Tangail Press Club President Ataur Rahman Azad. Among those present were Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar and Tangail District BNP President Hasanuzzamal Shahin, along with journalists and representatives from various public and private institutions.
The remarks come as the government seeks to reinforce its policy agenda following the recent elections, with ministers reiterating commitments to economic support, agricultural reform and institutional stability.
