Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Saturday warned of strict punitive measures against those involved in institutional corruption or poor-quality development work, saying offenders would face both dismissal and imprisonment.
Speaking at a meeting with Members of Parliament and government officials at the Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall, the minister reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption.
He said funds allocated for public welfare would be closely monitored to prevent misuse.
“Anyone involved in illegal commission-taking will face strict action. There will be no compromise,” he said.
Asaduzzaman emphasised that maintaining the quality of development projects, particularly roads and infrastructure, is a top priority.
He warned that contractors found using substandard materials would have their licences cancelled and could face the highest legal penalties.
Criticising the quality of road construction from Garaganj Bazar to Shailkupa on the Jhenaidah-Kushtia road, the minister said the contractor responsible would be blacklisted and subjected to maximum punishment under the law.
“Dishonest contractors will not get future government work,” he said, adding that corruption, extortion and irregularities in development projects would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He also urged citizens and public representatives to inform him directly if anyone attempts to collect commissions or engage in extortion.
Stressing collective responsibility, the minister said both the government and opposition must work together to eliminate corruption, terrorism, drugs and criminal activities.
Asaduzzaman further warned that government departments failing to discharge their duties properly would face disciplinary measures. Heads of such departments could also be reported to the Anti-Corruption Commission if irregularities are found.
The minister also said ensuring transparency, accountability and quality in development work is essential to protecting public interest and maintaining trust in government institutions.
