Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Saturday warned transport operators against increasing fares during Eid-ul-Fitr, saying violators would face strict legal consequences.
“No fare hike will be allowed under any circumstances. Those who create public suffering during Eid by ignoring this directive will face strict legal action,” the minister said while speaking to journalists during a visit to Narayanganj Terminal around 11am.
Earlier in the day, he inspected several key installations, including the Narayanganj Terminal, the under-construction Khanpur Inland Container Terminal (ICT) and Bulk Terminal, the Narayanganj Dredger Base, and a terminal building being constructed near the river port’s fish market with World Bank funding.
After the inspections, he held a meeting with officials of the concerned departments to review preparations for smooth Eid travel.
Addressing concerns about artificial shortages in the market, Rabiul Alam said some traders were attempting to create instability by delaying the unloading of essential commodities.
“During our inspection, we found wheat stored on lighter vessels. Those trying to disrupt the market by holding back goods have been warned and will face legal action,” he said.
The minister expressed optimism that this year’s Eid journey would be safe and comfortable.
He said authorities have identified vulnerable points where disruptions may occur and have issued necessary directives to prevent inconvenience.
Efforts to ensure smooth travel and maintain market stability will be more stringent this year compared to the previous one, he added.
State Minister Habibur Rashid, Shipping Secretary Dr Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mustafa and other officials were also present during the visit.
