Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that all outstanding wages and salaries of factory workers will be paid before the upcoming Eid to ensure financial relief for workers.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a views-exchange meeting with administrative officials at Sylhet Circuit House on Saturday.
The minister also said the government has formally sent a letter to the European Union as part of preparations for free trade agreements ahead of Bangladesh’s post-LDC graduation challenges.
He added that initiatives will be undertaken in phases to pursue free trade agreements with Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom to strengthen export competitiveness.
Meanwhile, Expatriates’ Welfare, Labour and Employment Adviser Ariful Haque Chowdhury said efforts are underway to reopen several closed overseas labour markets, with positive outcomes expected within the next month.
He also stated that steps are being taken to ensure timely issuance of passports and police clearance certificates for Bangladeshi workers intending to travel to Spain for employment.
Water Resources Minister Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Anne said river and canal dredging works and the construction of haor protection embankments are progressing ahead of the monsoon season.
He emphasised that strict monitoring will be enforced and that no irregularities or corruption will be tolerated in ongoing development projects.
Following the meeting, the ministers visited erosion-prone areas along the Surma and Chengar rivers to inspect ongoing protection works and assess local conditions.
