Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday pledged exemplary punishment for those involved in the recent attacks on the offices of leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, directing investigators to complete charge-sheets within two months after conducting a fair probe.

The minister made the remarks while visiting the burned-out office of Prothom Alo at Kawran Bazar in the capital, which was set on fire in what authorities described as a coordinated attack. He later inspected the damaged premises of The Daily Star at the same location.

Salahuddin Ahmed said the incidents had damaged Bangladesh’s international image and sent a negative message to the global community.

“The attacks created an impression that extremist forces are strong enough to target media institutions. This has hurt our reputation,” he said, adding that the government would ensure strict legal action to send a clear message that such groups cannot undermine the country’s progress.

He instructed the Detective Branch (DB) of Police to carry out a thorough investigation and submit charge-sheets within two months.

The minister said law enforcement agencies would ensure a transparent inquiry, while the judiciary would handle the trial proceedings.

“Our responsibility is to ensure a proper investigation. The courts will decide the outcome based on evidence,” he said, urging public cooperation to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Salahuddin also emphasised that no force seeking to disrupt stability and development would be allowed to succeed.

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Prime Minister’s Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman accompanied the home minister during the visits.
