Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday reviewed the situation of Bangladeshi expatriates residing in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries amid the ongoing conflict in the region.

The issue was discussed when Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir met the premier at the Secretariat in the morning.

According to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, the Prime Minister sought detailed updates on the safety and condition of Bangladeshi nationals living in affected countries and provided necessary instructions to relevant authorities.

The meeting also focused on disruptions to air travel, as several Middle East-bound flights have been cancelled due to the escalating situation. The Prime Minister directed authorities to ensure proper care and assistance for passengers stranded at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Atikur Rahman Ruman said that, following the Prime Minister’s directives, the civil aviation and tourism minister and the state minister have been actively overseeing the situation. The state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism has been stationed at the airport since morning to monitor arrangements.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury is also working closely with officials to address concerns of migrant workers and affected travellers.

Earlier in the day, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu met the Prime Minister to discuss earthquake preparedness.

The premier instructed authorities to formulate a comprehensive post-earthquake response plan and ordered the formation of 1 lakh volunteers in Dhaka to strengthen disaster response capacity.

Later, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood also met the Prime Minister to discuss sectoral matters.
