Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday announced plans to upgrade Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital into a 500-bed medical facility, aiming to significantly enhance healthcare services in the district.

The announcement came after the minister visited the hospital in the morning as part of his constituency tour.

During the inspection, he toured several wards and spoke with doctors, nurses and patients to assess the existing conditions and service standards.

Addressing journalists following the visit, Mirza Fakhrul said that while the hospital premises appeared neat and orderly, further improvements were needed in its overall management system to ensure more efficient and patient-friendly services.

He instructed Hospital Superintendent Dr Firoz Jewel to prepare and submit a comprehensive list outlining the infrastructure, equipment and manpower required to provide optimal healthcare support to local residents.

The minister assured that the government would extend necessary cooperation to address the identified gaps.

Emphasising accountability, he said that healthcare standards could be substantially improved if medical professionals and support staff carry out their responsibilities with dedication and professionalism.

He also urged the civil surgeon to take an active leadership role in strengthening the district’s entire healthcare network.

Mirza Fakhrul further revealed that steps are underway to establish a medical college in Thakurgaon, expressing hope that the initiative would create new opportunities for advanced medical education and treatment facilities in the region.

He voiced optimism that, with coordinated efforts and proper implementation, the district’s health sector would experience meaningful and lasting progress in the coming years.
