Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday urged India to take effective steps to prevent further incidents of border killings along the Bangladesh–India frontier, stressing the need for stronger coordination between border forces.

He made the remarks after holding a meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Kumar Verma at the Secretariat, where bilateral issues - particularly border security - were discussed in detail.

Addressing reporters, the minister said he conveyed Bangladesh’s position clearly, stating that no further loss of life at the border should occur.

He emphasised that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF) should continue regular consultations and strengthen joint mechanisms to minimise such incidents.

According to the minister, the Indian side expressed sincerity during the discussion and assured that relevant authorities would be instructed to address the concerns and prevent future occurrences.

The meeting also covered visa-related matters.

Salahuddin noted that Indian consular and visa offices had faced disruptions over the past year and a half due to attacks, which affected visa processing services.

However, he said the Indian authorities assured that visa operations would gradually resume and normalise.

He described the high commissioner’s visit as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement following the formation of the new government.

The discussions also touched on trade, security cooperation and broader bilateral relations.

The minister reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to maintaining relations with India based on sovereign equality, mutual respect and shared interests in trade, business and diplomacy.
