Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has intensified efforts to address Dhaka’s persistent traffic congestion by holding consultations with urban planning and transport experts on restructuring the capital’s traffic management system.

During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat, the Prime Minister sought expert recommendations on long-term reforms to improve mobility and reduce gridlock in the city.

The discussion was led by BUET Civil Engineering Department Professor Dr Md Shamsul Hoque and other specialists who shared their assessments and proposals on improving traffic flow and public transport coordination.

Officials said the Prime Minister emphasised the need for systematic changes to modernise transport management, strengthen coordination among relevant agencies and introduce practical solutions to ease daily commuter hardship. The initiative is seen as part of broader reforms aimed at improving urban infrastructure and public service efficiency.

As part of the transport overhaul plan, the Prime Minister also directed authorities to introduce a dedicated women-only bus service in Dhaka to enhance safety and comfort for female passengers. The move is expected to complement traffic reforms while improving inclusivity in public transport.

In parallel discussions, Tarique Rahman reviewed renovation and development work at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher and Liberation War Affairs Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmad attended separate meetings on the projects along with concerned officials.

Officials said further steps on traffic restructuring and transport reforms will be announced in phases.
