Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has directed law enforcement agencies across the country to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against extortion, robbery and drug-related crimes.
The instruction was given during a virtual meeting with police superintendents from all districts held at Police Headquarters in the capital on Monday, according to a press release.
Addressing the meeting, the IGP stressed that extortion and robbery, particularly on highways, must be curbed immediately.
He instructed both highway police and district units to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence operations to ensure security on major roads nationwide.
With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, the police chief emphasised the need to guarantee safe and hassle-free travel for homebound passengers.
He directed officers to take effective measures to reduce traffic congestion during the festive period and ensure smooth movement of people returning to their hometowns.
The IGP also highlighted the importance of improving public service standards at police stations.
He instructed officers to treat service seekers with respect and professionalism, ensuring prompt and transparent assistance.
“People who come to police stations for services should be treated in a way that they can return with a smile,” the IGP said, adding that innocent individuals must not face unnecessary harassment.
He further called for stronger public trust, responsible policing and better coordination among field units to enhance the overall image of Bangladesh Police.
Additional Inspectors General and senior officials of Police Headquarters also attended the virtual meeting.
