Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government has both verbally and formally offered the position of Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad to the main opposition party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, in line with the spirit of the July National Charter.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Monday, the minister said the proposal reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and ensuring meaningful participation of the opposition in legislative affairs.

“Respecting the July Charter, the government has proposed that the opposition party select its candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker,” Salahuddin Ahmed said.

He explained that the July National Charter emphasises inclusivity, cooperation and the restoration of democratic norms following the recent political transition.

Offering the Deputy Speaker’s post to the opposition is intended to reinforce those principles and promote constructive engagement within parliament.

The home minister noted that the government believes a strong and active opposition plays a vital role in ensuring accountability and balanced debate in the Jatiya Sangsad.

By inviting Jamaat to nominate its own candidate, the administration aims to uphold parliamentary traditions and foster a more collaborative political environment.

He did not specify a timeline for finalising the appointment but indicated that further discussions would take place once the opposition party responds to the proposal.
