Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for Japan’s support in advancing reform and restructuring initiatives within Bangladesh’s police force, emphasising the need for modernisation and capacity building to enhance law enforcement services.

The request was made during a meeting with Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi at the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday morning.

The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas related to law enforcement, security and institutional development.

During the meeting, the home minister described Japan as a close and dependable partner of Bangladesh, highlighting its longstanding contributions to the country’s development.

He noted that Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has played a vital role in supporting major infrastructure projects, including the metro rail system and the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Referring to past collaboration, the minister mentioned Japan’s involvement in traffic management and road safety initiatives with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He said such partnerships demonstrate the scope for expanding cooperation into broader police reform efforts.

“There are numerous areas where our two countries can work together. We are keen to explore Japanese assistance in police reform and restructuring and will soon outline specific proposals,” he said.

The meeting also covered issues of mutual interest, including law and order, security coordination, traffic management, and economic cooperation in trade and investment sectors.
