Dhaka, Washington pledge greater cooperation in aviation sector

Bangladesh and the United States have discussed expanding collaboration in the development and modernisation of the aviation sector during a meeting between US Ambassador Brent T Christensen and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroz Khanam.

The discussion took place at the Secretariat on Tuesday when the US envoy paid a courtesy call on the minister.

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat was also present at that time, according to an official handout.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted the strong and enduring partnership between Dhaka and Washington, stressing the importance of further enhancing cooperation in strategic sectors such as civil aviation.

The Bangladesh side emphasised the need for greater US support in upgrading aviation infrastructure, improving regulatory standards and strengthening technical capacity.

Officials noted that modernisation of airports, safety mechanisms and air traffic management systems remain a priority as the country seeks to position itself as a regional aviation hub.

Minister Afroz Khanam underscored the government’s commitment to expanding connectivity and ensuring compliance with international aviation standards.

She expressed hope that enhanced cooperation with the United States would help accelerate reforms and capacity-building initiatives.

Ambassador Christensen reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development goals and assured continued cooperation with the present government in areas of mutual interest.

He conveyed the United States’ readiness to assist in advancing shared priorities in aviation and related sectors.

Both sides agreed to maintain close engagement to explore practical avenues for collaboration in the coming months.
