Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has warned that government doctors found engaged in private practice during official working hours or neglecting duties will face stringent disciplinary measures.
Speaking at a press conference on contemporary issues at the ministry in the Secretariat on Thursday, the minister said the Prime Minister has issued clear instructions to stop such practices and ensure discipline in public hospitals.
He stated that any verified allegation of misconduct will be dealt with firmly under existing rules.
“Duty negligence in government healthcare facilities will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said, adding that monitoring and intelligence supervision have been intensified across the country to prevent irregularities.
The minister also announced that the government plans to recruit around 1 lakh additional healthcare personnel, including midwives, pharmacists and medical technologists, to strengthen public health services and reduce staff shortages in hospitals.
Referring to recent action against misconduct, he said the medical licence of a government doctor, Dr Rajesh Majumdar, has been suspended for six months after investigations found him absent from duty while treating patients at a private hospital. A show-cause notice has been issued to both the doctor and the private facility concerned.
He further said that the case came to light following media reports, after which the Prime Minister directed authorities to take swift action.
Acknowledging manpower gaps in public hospitals, the minister said recruitment efforts are underway to improve service quality and patient care nationwide.
