Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam on Thursday warned that bus operators will face cancellation of route permits if they charge fares above the approved rates during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr travel period.
He made the remarks while briefing reporters after a meeting at the Secretariat focused on ensuring safe and smooth passenger movement during Eid. The meeting discussed transport management, fare enforcement and passenger safety measures.
The minister said even a minor overcharge will be treated seriously.
“If anyone takes even one taka more than the approved fare, report it to us. Strict and exemplary action will be taken. We will enforce this without compromise,” he said.
He emphasised that fare rates have already been fixed and there is no justification for charging passengers extra.
According to him, transport owners who attended the meeting assured authorities that they would comply with the official fare structure and avoid any unauthorised charges during the holiday rush.
Rabiul Alam further clarified that operators have no legal room to impose additional fees beyond the approved tariff. Passengers, he said, have the right to verify fares and challenge overcharging.
He reiterated that regulatory authorities will monitor the situation closely.
Any transport company found violating the rules may face penalties, including cancellation of route permits, he added.
