Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia will receive the Best Indomitable Woman in Advancing Democracy award as part of the government’s International Women’s Day 2026 recognition programme, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has announced.
The award will be presented to Khaleda Zia on 8 March at a ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, organised under the government’s annual Indomitable Women Award programme marking International Women’s Day.
According to officials from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Khaleda Zia is being honoured for her role in the restoration and advancement of democracy in Bangladesh, recognising what the ministry described as her uncompromising political struggle and leadership in upholding democratic processes in the country.
The recognition highlights her long-standing political influence and contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic landscape, officials said.
Alongside Khaleda Zia, the government will honour five other women as Best Indomitable Women across different categories for their achievements and social contributions.
Nurun Nahar Akter will receive the award in the economic success category, while Bobita Khatun will be recognised for contributions in education and employment.
Nurbanu Kabir will receive the award in the successful mother category, acknowledging her role in family and community development.
Shamla Begum will be honoured for overcoming the trauma of violence and achieving success in life, reflecting resilience and empowerment.
Afroza Yasmin will receive the award for outstanding contributions to social development, according to the ministry.
The awards are part of Bangladesh’s official International Women’s Day celebrations, which recognise women who have made significant contributions to democracy, economic progress, social welfare and community development.
Government officials said the programme aims to highlight the achievements of women across sectors and encourage greater participation of women in leadership, economic activity and national development.
