Renovation work on the Sri Sri Rakshakali Temple and Sri Sri Durga Temple in Dhaka’s Mohakhali has officially started as part of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s election commitment to support religious institutions and community development.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Saturday morning in front of the Tuberculosis Hospital in Mohakhali.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Milton formally launched the project.

Mohakhali falls under the Dhaka-17 constituency, where the Prime Minister had pledged before the 12 February parliamentary election to renovate the existing temples and establish a new cultural theatre within the temple complex.

Authorities said the project is now moving forward soon after the formation of the government.

DNCC officials confirmed that the renovation work will be funded by the city corporation.

Speaking at the event, DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Milton said the government is committed to ensuring religious harmony and equal respect for all faiths.

He stated that the project reflects the government’s pledge and added that local authorities will cooperate with religious communities to protect their rights and ensure peaceful practice of faith.

He encouraged community members to report any grievances or concerns to the authorities for swift action.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam also addressed the gathering, emphasising freedom of religion and rejecting discrimination.

He said the government stands against any form of oppression or intimidation targeting religious communities.

He further said that fulfilling electoral promises is a priority for the government and that development initiatives will continue in different sectors.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Advisers Farhad Dalim Doner and Bijon Kanti Sarkar, Hindu Welfare Trust Director Tapan Majumder, and Gulshan Banani Puja Celebration Committee President JL Bhowmik, among others, were also present at the inaugural function.
