Zaima Rahman has received the Best Indomitable Woman in Advancing Democracy award on behalf of former prime minister Khaleda Zia during the International Women’s Day 2026 celebrations in Dhaka.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin handed over the award at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, recognising Khaleda Zia’s role in the country’s democratic movement and political leadership.

The award was presented under the Indomitable Women Award programme organised by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs as part of the national observance of International Women’s Day.

Khaleda Zia was honoured for what the ministry described as her steadfast leadership in the struggle to restore democracy and her contributions to strengthening democratic processes in Bangladesh.

Zaima Rahman, a UK-trained barrister and daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, accepted the award on behalf of her family.

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including physician and social worker Jobaida Rahman, wife of the prime minister.

Alongside Khaleda Zia, five other women were honoured in different categories for their achievements and resilience.

Nurun Nahar Akter received recognition for contributions to economic empowerment, while Bobita Khatun was awarded in the education and employment category.

Nur Banu Kabir was honoured in the successful mother category, recognising her role in family and social development.

Shamla Begum received an award for overcoming violence-related trauma and rebuilding her life, highlighting resilience and empowerment.

Afroza Yasmin was recognised for her contributions to social development.

Officials from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs said the awards aim to highlight the achievements of women who have made significant contributions to society and national development.

The annual programme forms part of Bangladesh’s International Women’s Day observance, which promotes women’s leadership, empowerment and equality across sectors.
