Bangladesh will bring back two suspects arrested in India in the Hadi murder case under the existing extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after attending a district law and order committee meeting in Cox’s Bazar, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government has already begun the legal and diplomatic process to return the accused to Bangladesh.

“The Home Ministry has taken steps regarding the arrest of the two suspects, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been requested to take necessary measures to bring them back in line with the extradition agreement,” the minister said.

The two suspects were recently detained in India’s West Bengal state, and Bangladeshi authorities are now working through diplomatic channels to ensure their return so that they can face legal proceedings in connection with the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

The meeting in Cox’s Bazar marked Salahuddin Ahmed’s first district-level law and order meeting in his home district since assuming office.

During the briefing, the home minister also addressed broader law enforcement issues, saying the government is preparing a comprehensive list of drug traffickers through a professional verification process. He said the list will not be made public to prevent political influence or potential inaccuracies.

Salahuddin Ahmed emphasised that the government will maintain a zero-tolerance approach to mob violence, terrorism and extortion, adding that anyone involved in such activities will face legal action to ensure good governance and public safety.

The minister also announced measures aimed at restoring discipline in the tourism sector of Cox’s Bazar, one of Bangladesh’s most visited destinations. He said illegal permanent and temporary structures built on the sand dunes along the beach will be removed within a week as part of efforts to protect the coastal environment and maintain the area’s attractiveness for visitors.

Authorities are also planning to install CCTV cameras at key locations across the town to strengthen security and improve law enforcement monitoring.

The meeting was attended by several local officials and political leaders, including Shahjahan Chowdhury, Lutfur Rahman Kajol, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Superintendent of Police ANM Sajedur Rahman, and Cox’s Bazar district BNP general secretary Shamima Ara Swapna.

Officials said the government will continue coordinating with Indian authorities to complete the extradition process and ensure the suspects are returned to Bangladesh to face trial in the Hadi murder case.
