The government aims to develop journalism in Bangladesh that meets international standards while guaranteeing full media freedom, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said on Monday.

Addressing an iftar and doa mahfil organised by the Dhaka Sub-Editors Council (DSEC) at the Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall of the National Press Club, the minister emphasised the importance of dialogue with journalists to shape policies that foster professional and ethical journalism.

“Sub-editors are the backbone of any media outlet. They turn raw information into publishable news and transform footage into meaningful content. The credibility and acceptability of news largely depend on their skills and experience,” said Zahir Uddin Swapan.

Chaired by DSEC President Muktadir Anik and moderated by General Secretary Jawhar Iqbal Khan, the event was also addressed by Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abu Abdullah M Saleh, BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury, National Press Club General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, and leaders of the Dhaka Union of Journalists.

The minister stressed the need to modernise media institutions, many of which still operate under outdated structures.

“Traditional frameworks cannot support modern journalism. A roadmap for digital transformation is essential, and it must be prepared in consultation with journalists,” he said.

Minister Swapan also highlighted the importance of ensuring fair wages and dignified working conditions for journalists, stating that independent journalism cannot thrive without security and respect for media professionals.

He assured that the government would soon formulate a comprehensive policy for media development, in consultation with journalists, to promote professionalism, digital transformation, and a free, responsible press.
