Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the newly launched ‘Family Card’ programme marks a major step towards women’s economic empowerment and the establishment of a welfare-oriented state under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Speaking at a distribution ceremony at Biman Bandar High School Ground in Chattogram’s Patenga on Tuesday, the minister highlighted that the programme, targeting female household heads, demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusive development and direct support for marginalised communities.
“The ‘Family Card’ is designed to empower women, make them financially self-reliant, and recognise their tireless contributions at home,” Amir Khasru said.
He added that the initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of an economy that benefits all segments of society, not just privileged classes.
The minister emphasised that the programme will be implemented without political bias, ensuring that benefits reach the intended recipients efficiently and transparently, further strengthening Bangladesh’s socio-economic resilience.
The initial phase in Chattogram will distribute 5,775 family cards, with plans to expand gradually to poor, low- and middle-income households nationwide. The programme is part of a wider package of pro-people welfare schemes, including the Farmer’s Card, Health Card, and Canal Excavation Project, aimed at stabilising commodity prices, supporting farmers and improving public welfare.
State Minister for Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Md Helal Uddin praised the initiative, noting that previous administrations had failed to implement such people-focused programmes.
He said the ‘Family Card’ scheme exemplifies the Prime Minister’s commitment to addressing citizens’ real needs and integrating women into the mainstream economy.
The ceremony also featured the distribution of large replica Family Cards to five selected women, symbolising their empowerment and the government’s focus on gender-inclusive policies.
Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ziauddin, Member of the BNP’s International Affairs Sub-Committee Ishrafil Kahsru , City BNP Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman and Director of Divisional Social Welfare Department Minhazur Rahman, among others, were also present at the event.
