Home Minister and BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said all major political and legal debates should take place in the Jatiya Sangsad, emphasising that parliamentary discussions are essential for strengthening democracy and the rule of law.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion titled “Expectations of the Legal Community Towards the Current Government in Establishing Democracy, Rule of Law, Protection of Human Rights and Good Governance” at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium in the capital.
The programme was organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum.
Salahuddin Ahmed said differences of opinion are natural in a democratic system and should be addressed through debate in parliament.
“Let all discussions take place in the National Parliament. Whatever is legal, constitutional and desired by the people will ultimately prevail,” he said.
The home minister noted that the government remains committed to implementing the July National Charter, which he described as a political understanding signed with a pledge to the nation. He also said the government would work to implement the BNP’s election manifesto in line with the people’s mandate.
Referring to the Constitution Reform Council issue, he said any oath or legal process must be determined through the Jatiya Sangsad and incorporated into the constitution through proper legislation, while the Supreme Court ultimately ensures the protection of constitutional provisions.
Salahuddin Ahmed also spoke about the 133 ordinances issued by the previous interim government, saying the constitution requires them to be placed in the first session of parliament, which will decide whether to approve, amend, or cancel them.
The discussion was chaired by Bangladesh Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum President and Bangladesh Bar Council Vice Chairman Zainul Abedin, MP, and attended by senior lawyers and leaders of the organisation.
