National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam on Thursday urged that the Jatiya Sangsad be kept free from fascist influence, insisting that no individual associated with authoritarian or oppressive regimes should be allowed to speak in the House.

Speaking during a condolence session in Parliament to honour those who were killed or injured during the July Mass Uprising, Nahid emphasised the responsibility of lawmakers to respect the sacrifices made by the martyrs who fought for democracy and justice.

“The reason we are able to sit in this House today is because of the courage and sacrifices of those who gave their lives during the July Uprising. Their contributions demand our utmost respect and accountability,” he said.

Nahid called for a parliament free from partisan bias and oppressive influence.

“We strongly request that no fascist or their collaborators be allowed to contaminate this House by delivering speeches or influencing proceedings. The National Parliament must remain a space free from fascism and political intimidation,” he added.

The NCP leader also reiterated his party’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of the July massacre, including the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, as well as those affected by enforced disappearances, corruption and violent crimes.

“July represents a turning point for Bangladesh - it signifies the establishment of a democratic, inclusive, and fair society. It is a call for a nation free from oppression, hegemony and fascist tendencies. We must safeguard these principles within our legislative institutions,” Nahid said, stressing that the values of the uprising must continue to guide parliamentary conduct and governance in the country.
