Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate a government initiative to provide monthly honorariums to religious leaders from different faith communities across Bangladesh, according to an official announcement.
The programme will be formally launched on March 14 at 10:00am during a ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka. The information was confirmed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Under the new scheme, financial support will be distributed every month to a range of religious functionaries representing major faiths in the country. Beneficiaries will include imams, muezzins and khadems serving at mosques, as well as priests and sebaits of Hindu temples. Leaders of Buddhist monasteries, including principals and vice-principals, will also receive the allowance, alongside priests and assistant priests serving in churches.
Government officials say the initiative is intended to recognise the social role played by religious institutions and their leaders in community life across Bangladesh. The programme is also expected to strengthen support for religious service providers who often work at the grassroots level in both urban and rural areas.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally launch the programme at the inauguration ceremony, marking the start of the nationwide honorarium distribution.
