The government has introduced a series of measures aimed at ensuring safe, smooth and comfortable journeys for people travelling home ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, according to Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal Coordinator Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.

Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with transport owners and workers in Dhaka on Friday, Shimul Biswas said authorities have been instructed to coordinate closely to manage the increased travel pressure that typically occurs during the Eid holiday period.

The meeting, held at the Gulistan Natya Mancha open ground in the capital, brought together representatives of transport owners, workers, law enforcement agencies, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), journalists and officials from the city corporation. It was organised by transport owners and workers from the Gulistan and Fulbaria bus terminals to discuss preparations for Eid travel.

Shimul Biswas said millions of people leave Dhaka and other major cities each year to celebrate Eid with their families in rural areas, placing significant pressure on road, river and rail transport networks. To address this, authorities have been asked to strengthen coordination and monitoring across key transport points.

He said law enforcement agencies and transport-related institutions will increase supervision at bus terminals, highways and other critical locations to ensure passenger safety and maintain traffic discipline. Particular attention will be given to preventing the operation of unfit vehicles on roads.

Transport owners and drivers have also been urged to avoid reckless driving and overspeeding, follow traffic regulations and ensure adequate rest for drivers to reduce the risk of accidents.

Shimul Biswas added that special attention should be given to the safety and comfort of vulnerable passengers, including women, children and elderly travellers.

He emphasised that cooperation among government agencies, transport operators and workers would be essential to ensure that the large-scale movement of people during Eid does not lead to disruption or hardship.

The meeting was chaired by Jahangir Sikder, convenor of the Gulistan Terminal Bus Owners Association. Among those present were Acting Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Sarwar, President of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners’ Association MA Baten, its Secretary General Saiful Alam and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation Humayun Kabir Khan.

Authorities in Bangladesh routinely implement special monitoring and coordination measures ahead of major religious holidays as millions of people travel across the country to celebrate with their families.
