Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Saturday stressed the importance of protecting religious values from what he described as “religion traders,” saying such protection is essential to maintaining national unity and integrity.

Speaking at a discussion marking the 47th death anniversary of prominent politician Mashuir Rahman Jadu Mia, the minister said safeguarding genuine religious values would prevent divisive forces from weakening the country.

The event was held at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

Zahir Uddin Swapan said three key elements currently shape the country’s political environment under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. These, he noted, are Bangladeshi nationalism, multiparty democracy and religious values.

According to the minister, the government is committed to upholding and strengthening these principles.

However, he emphasised that religious values must remain free from manipulation by individuals who use religion for personal or political gain.

“If religious values can be protected from religion traders, then no force will be able to defeat Bangladesh,” he said.

Recalling the legacy of Mashuir Rahman Jadu Mia, the minister described him as a visionary leader and a close associate of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani.

He noted that Jadu Mia played a significant role during a crucial political transition by symbolically transferring Bhasani’s “sheaf of paddy” symbol to Ziaur Rahman.

Zahir Uddin Swapan said this symbolic shift reflected Jadu Mia’s political insight and helped shape the country’s path toward multiparty democracy. Although he passed away at the age of 55, the minister said his contributions helped lay the groundwork for a democratic political culture in Bangladesh.

He also mentioned that Khaleda Zia carried forward the political legacy for many years before it eventually passed on to Tarique Rahman.

The minister further said the government is working to promote the spirit of Bangladeshi nationalism with the slogan “Bangladesh First.”

He added that the message aims to encourage citizens to prioritise national interests above external influences.

Addressing recent political developments, Swapan said certain groups had attempted to create controversy surrounding the 12 February election and delay the voting process.

However, he said the government successfully held the election, ensuring the continuation of democratic practices.

Referring to the political changes following 1975 political changeover in Bangladesh, the minister said the one-party system of the time had created a difficult political environment. He added that the situation eventually stabilised under the leadership of Ziaur Rahman.

The discussion was chaired by noted rhymester Abu Saleh. The main speaker was Professor Mahbub Ullah.

Among others who addressed the event were Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablul, politician Syed Didar Bakht and Jadu Mia’s daughter Rita Rahman.
