Dr Shafiqur Rahman, member of parliament from Dhaka-15 constituency, has been formally recognised as the leader of the opposition in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
The official announcement came through a gazette notification issued by the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat on 12 March 2026.
The recognition was granted under Rule 2(1)(Ta) of the Rules of Procedure of the Jatiya Sangsad and the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, 2021.
Alongside Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, MP from Cumilla-11 constituency, has been officially designated as the deputy leader of the opposition under the same law.
The recognition follows parliamentary convention, whereby the leader of the opposition is chosen from the party or coalition with the largest number of MPs not supporting the government in the current parliament.
This formal notification marks the first official recognition of the opposition leadership in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, allowing Dr Shafiqur Rahman and his deputy to exercise the privileges and responsibilities granted under the 2021 legislation.
