The newly appointed administrators of five city corporations met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office located within the parliament building around noon, according to the PM’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.
Administrators representing Barishal, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Cumilla attended the meeting. State Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Shahe Alam was also present there.
Earlier, the government appointed Bilkis Akter Jahan Shirin for Barishal City Corporation, Md Mahfuzur Rahman for Rajshahi City Corporation, Md Rukunuzzaman Rokon for Mymensingh City Corporation, Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury for Rangpur City Corporation and Md Yusuf Molla for Cumilla City Corporation. The appointments were formalised through a gazette notification.
All five administrators are leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and are scheduled to assume their responsibilities on Sunday.
Officials from the Local Government Division said the administrators will manage the affairs of the respective city corporations until elections are held. Once elections take place, the responsibilities will be handed over to the newly elected mayors.
Earlier, on 23 February, the government appointed administrators to six city corporations, including Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation.
With the latest appointments, the number of city corporations currently run by administrators has risen to 11.
However, at Chattogram City Corporation, Shahadat Hossain is currently performing the duties of mayor following a court order.
