The minister for education and primary and mass education, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, informed the Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday that several ongoing projects are underway across the country to improve primary and mass education.
Responding to a starred question from S M Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka-18), the minister said a total of five projects are currently being implemented under the Directorate of Primary Education to strengthen the primary education sector.
He noted that these include the Fourth Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP4), running from July 2018 to June 2026, and the Demand-Based Government Primary School Development Project (1st Phase), which has been ongoing since July 2016 and will continue until 2026.
Another initiative, titled Establishment and Infrastructure Development of Government Primary Schools with Aesthetic Enhancement in Dhaka Metropolitan and Purbachal, is being implemented from January 2020 to June 2027.
Additionally, the government is running the Pre-primary and Primary Education Improvement Project in Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, and Bhasan Char of Noakhali from July 2024 to June 2027.
Milon added that a school feeding programme for government primary schools in 150 upazilas is underway, spanning January 2025 to December 2027.
Through the Bureau of Non-Formal Education, a course titled 'Effective Literacy and Practical Skills Training (Pre-vocational Level)' is being conducted in 58 districts nationwide.
Furthermore, the government has launched the Alternative Learning Opportunity for Out-of-School Children (ALO) project in one upazila of each of the country’s 64 districts to provide alternative education opportunities for children who are out of school.
The minister noted that the project was approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on 25 January 2026 and will run from January 2026 to December 2028.
