Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday extended an Eid-ul-Fitr financial gift of Tk5,000 to every sanitation worker employed across Bangladesh’s 12 city corporations, highlighting the government’s recognition of their essential services.

The handover took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat at 3:30pm, where the Prime Minister personally provided cheques to the Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation and administrators representing other city corporations, according to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.

“The Prime Minister handed over Tk5,000 to each cleaner through their respective mayors and administrators,” Atikur Rahman Rumon said, emphasising that the initiative aims to show respect and solidarity with sanitation workers, whose day-to-day efforts are crucial for maintaining clean, safe, and liveable urban environments.

Atikur Rahman Rumon added that this gesture seeks to bring additional happiness to the families of city cleaners during the festive period, acknowledging the tireless work of these essential employees.

He also noted that the government plans to continue supporting urban service workers through various welfare programmes and humanitarian initiatives in the future.

The cheque distribution ceremony was attended by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mir Shah Alam, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain, and administrators from the remaining 11 city corporations.

This financial support comes at a critical time when urban sanitation workers continue to serve on the frontlines, especially in high-density cities, ensuring hygiene and public health standards during the busy Eid holiday season.

The Prime Minister’s initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to acknowledging and uplifting frontline urban employees whose work often goes unnoticed.

By offering this Eid gift, the government underscores the importance of sanitation workers in sustaining city operations and improving quality of life for all residents.

Officials said similar initiatives will be expanded in the future to cover other categories of urban service personnel, reinforcing a culture of recognition and support across municipal administrations.

The ceremony concluded with expressions of gratitude from city administrators and workers alike, who welcomed the Prime Minister’s personal recognition of their contributions during the festive period.
