State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday inaugurated canal excavation work in Faridpur as part of the government’s ongoing nationwide programme to restore rivers, canals and other water bodies.

The project will focus on excavating a canal stretching from Bolerbag to the Sonakhola Bridge in Manikdah Union under Bhanga Upazila of the district.

Authorities say the initiative is expected to improve water flow in the area, enhance irrigation opportunities for farmers and help revive natural waterways that have gradually become clogged or silted over time.

Officials involved in the programme said restoring canals is essential for strengthening water management systems and ensuring that water resources are used more effectively, particularly in agricultural regions. Improved canal connectivity is also expected to support crop production by providing reliable irrigation during dry seasons.

The excavation effort in Faridpur is part of a broader government initiative being implemented across Bangladesh to revitalise rivers, canals and wetlands that have deteriorated due to sedimentation and lack of maintenance. The nationwide programme aims to address long-standing problems such as poor drainage, waterlogging and declining irrigation capacity in many rural areas.

Officials believe that reopening natural water channels will not only benefit farmers but also help reduce flooding risks during the monsoon season by improving the movement of excess water. In addition, the restored waterways are expected to contribute to environmental sustainability by supporting local ecosystems.

The government has emphasised that coordinated efforts among different ministries and local authorities will be necessary to ensure the successful implementation of the canal restoration projects. Through these initiatives, policymakers hope to strengthen rural infrastructure, improve agricultural productivity and enhance overall water resource management in the country.
