Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has emphasised that the BNP government is committed to moving forward in line with the historic July National Charter.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a canal excavation programme at Moragacha-Hashimpur in Khoksa Upazila of Kushtia on Monday, the minister said the party respects both the legal framework and the spirit of the charter.
Responding to recent comments made by leaders of the NCP regarding the constitutional referendum, Md Asaduzzaman said, “These statements reflect a partial understanding of the issue. They have only grasped half the picture. The government will provide clarification in the National Parliament. Our approach will always balance both emotion and law.”
The minister also highlighted the government’s ambitious plans for nationwide water management, noting that BNP intends to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometres of rivers and canals while removing illegal encroachments along water bodies.
On the matter of pending legal cases, he added that the government would hold consultations with all stakeholders before making decisions, ensuring a fair and inclusive process.
The canal excavation initiative is part of the government’s broader programme to improve irrigation, boost agricultural productivity, and strengthen flood management across the country.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Mahbubul Alam.
Other dignitaries present included Kushtia-1 lawmaker Reza Ahmed Bacchu, Kushtia-4 lawmaker Afzal Hussain, former lawmaker Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi and Kushtia Zilla Parishad Administrator Principal Sohrab Uddin.
