Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir on Tuesday expressed hope that this year’s Eid travel will be smoother and safer, assuring that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to facilitate hassle-free journeys for homebound passengers.

Speaking to journalists after visiting Gabtali Bus Terminal in the capital, the IGP said all police units will remain actively deployed across key points, including highways and transport hubs, to maintain order and prevent any irregularities.

“There will be no tolerance for wrongdoing,” he said, emphasising that strict action will be taken against passenger harassment, overcharging of fares and any form of disorder during the Eid rush.

He acknowledged that travellers often face significant difficulties during Eid, including long hours of traffic congestion that sometimes prevent people from reaching their destinations even after starting their journey well in advance.

To address these issues, the government has already held coordination meetings involving relevant agencies to improve traffic management and ensure discipline in the transport sector.

The police chief said special attention is being given to highway management, adding that greater compliance with traffic rules by drivers and helpers could significantly reduce congestion.

Highlighting security concerns, he noted that bus terminals often become hotspots for criminal activities, including theft and drug-related offences. In response, police presence will be strengthened in such areas to ensure passenger safety.

On the issue of unauthorised long-distance bus counters operating within Dhaka city, the IGP said such activities will not be tolerated and legal steps will be taken to remove them.

Senior police officials, including acting Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Sarwar, accompanied the IGP during the visit.
