Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam on Tuesday said there has been no significant traffic congestion so far as people begin their journeys home for Eid, expressing optimism that travel will remain smooth this year.
The minister made the remarks after inaugurating the Goma Bridge in Bakerganj Upazila of Barishal.
State Minister Habibur Rashid, local MP Abul Hossain Khan, and senior officials were also present at the event.
He noted that nearly 15 million people are expected to leave Dhaka within a few days ahead of Eid, calling it a major challenge for authorities to manage traffic efficiently.
“We have taken comprehensive preparations under the Prime Minister’s instructions to ensure passengers can travel safely and comfortably,” he said.
Authorities are monitoring 207 potential congestion points across highways and major bridges, he added. While traffic movement is slower in some areas, no severe gridlock has been reported so far.
Highlighting infrastructure development, the minister said the newly opened 283-metre Goma Bridge will significantly improve regional connectivity and support local economic growth.
The bridge, built over the Rangamatiya River at a cost of Tk750 million, had faced delays since construction began in 2018 due to technical and regulatory issues. It was finally opened to traffic on Tuesday, with vehicles crossing immediately after inauguration.
The minister also said efforts are underway to maintain navigability in 7,500 kilometres of waterways through regular dredging, with ongoing work on 1,200 kilometres and plans to excavate another 4,500 kilometres. Steps are also being taken to ensure uninterrupted vessel movement between Dhaka’s Sadarghat and Barishal.
Residents gathered in large numbers to witness the bridge opening, expressing appreciation as the long-awaited project was completed ahead of Eid.
